What
is Retina?
Retina
is the photosensitive layer in the eye, which receives light and transmits
signals to the brain through the optic nerve. This process results in the
sense of vision. Macula is the most sensitive part of the retina responsible
for central vision.
What
is vitreous?
Vitreous
is a clear gel like material, which fills the inner cavity of the eyeball.
What
are the common disorders of retina and vitreous?
Disorders
of the retina and the vitreous can cause significant visual disturbance
or alteration. These include:
-
Retinal
detachment.
-
Retinal
Vascular disorders.
-
Degenerations
and Dystrophies.
-
Tumors.
-
Consequences
of Trauma.
What
is Retinal detachment & how is it treated?
Retinal
Detachment may occur due to previous retinal defects like holes and tears
(more common in Myopia). This leads to sudden onset of cloudy vision, feeling
of a curtain falling in front of the eye. This may be preceded by symptoms
like floaters and flashes of light. A prompt surgery like scleral buckling
or vitreo-retinal surgery promises good result. Any delay decreases chances
of visual recovery.
I
am a myope. Should I consult a retina specialist?
Yes,
you should get your retina screened by indirect ophthalmoscopy. There can
be holes or tears in your retina which may not cause any symptoms and can
only be detected screening. In case they are present in your eye, they
may require laser treatment or cryopexy in some cases in order to prevent
retinal detachment. An annual retinal checkup is a must.
I
am a diabetic patient, do I need a retinal examination?
Diabetic
Retinopathy is one of the leading causes of blindness. New blood vessels
are formed in the retina, which are abnormal and tend to leak. This leads
to irreversible retinal damage and therefore decreases vision. A timely
laser treatment in early stages may retard or stop the deterioration. Routine
follow-up is a must for such patients.
Fundus
fluorescein angiography is a specialized technique of photographing the
retinal and choroidal blood vessels with the help of a contrast dye injected
in the blood. It is a very useful tool to access the status of the retina
in diabetic retinopathy and other vascular disorders.
Why
does a hypertension patient need to visit an ophthalmologist?
Long
standing hypertension may alter the thickness of the retinal vessels in
some patients which may obstruct the retinal vein on artery's leading to
sudden diminission of vision. This requires detailed evaluation in studying
fluorescein angiography and may be treated with laser if necessary.
What
are the common Degenerations And Dystrophies of retina?
The
common disorders of this group are:
-
Age related
macular degeneration - It is a degeneration of the central retina effecting
central vision in middle to older age group persons. Early diagnosis and
laser treatment may be helpful in preserving vision. These patients also
benefit with low visual aids.
-
Retinitis
Pigmentosa - It is a hereditary dystrophy which may manifest as night blindness
in early phases and may progress to blindness. Patient's awareness and
counseling is important in this condition.
Can
tumors occur in retina?
Tumors
of the retina may occur at any age in life. They may be benign or malignant.
Timely intervention is a must in these cases.
