The
cornea services at NEC includes evaluating and treating diseases
of external adenexa, conjuctiva and cornea. The patients are also evaluated
and treated for cataract and refractive errors.
What
is Cornea?
The
Cornea is clear front layer of the eye covering colored iris. It is the
strongest refracting structure of the eye focusing light on retina.
How
does corneal disease affect vision?
Normal
vision depends on the clarity, thickness and smoothness of cornea. Opacities,
scars, swelling or irregular shape causes the cornea to scatter light resulting
in blurred vision or glare.
What
are the commonly treated corneal conditions at NEC ?
We
treat or limit the common conditions like
-
Degenerations
/ Dystrophies
-
Dry eyes
-
Keratitis
/ Infections
-
Trauma
-
Chemical
injuries
-
Surface
ocular disorders etc.
Does
Laser have a role?
Superficial
scars / opacities are treated by Photo Therapeutic Keratectomy (PTK) by excimer
laser.
What
is corneal transplantation?
A
corneal transplant is an operation in which the diseased cornea is removed
(not the whole eyeball) and replaced with a healthy donated human cornea.
What
are the conditions that require corneal transplantation?
Any
dense scar / opacity, keraticonus, bullous keratopathy, severe dystrophics
are the commoner indications.
What
is a corneal donor?
The
choice to donate ones cornea after death can allow a person to gain vision
and lead a healthier life.
How
to become a donor?
If
you wish to be a donor after your death, the most important thing to do
is to tell your family of your wishes, who in turn will call the local
eye bank.
What
are the potential risk / success rate?
Corneal
transplants are rejected 5 to 30% of the time even in best of hands. Most
rejections, if treated promptly, can be stopped. Irregular curvature (astigmatism)
may slow the return of vision.
What
are contact lenses?
These
are small plastic lenses fitted to the size and shape of patients cornea,
floating over the tear film layer. NEC offers quality care for normal
and specialized contact lens fitting.
Why
are contact lens used?
These
are used to correct refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness
& corneal astigmatism. Special lenses are available for keratoconus. Also
therapeutic contact lens are used for various eye diseases. Some people
also used colored contact lenses for cosmetic purpose.
How
are contacts fitted?
After
thorough examination of your eye, the best lens for an individual's eye
is advised. Various type of lenses include rigid(hard), rigid gas permeable(semisoft),
soft, toric, extended wear & disposable lenses.A series or trial lenses
may also be used in determinning the best size and fit, before your custom
made lenses are ordered.
The
clinic uses computer technology along with sophisticated gadgets to provide
comprehensive corneal disease evaluation and treatment including computerised
endothelial cell analysis, corneal topographic mapping ultrasonic pachymetry
and excimer laser.
